Radio Lío is a project inspired by Pope Francis' call to young people to “make noise” during World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro in 2013. Radio Lío, the spark of the word, is a radio station made of youth for youth that unites radio amateurs and professionals from 11 Latin American countries.

This initiative was promoted by SIGNIS Latin America and the Caribbean, SIGNIS ALC, as a media education project where young people could learn everything behind the production and transmission of a radio program, and then broadcast it themselves within the Radio Lío network. As an online radio station, it is possible to tune in from anywhere in the world and listen to programs that address social issues, safeguarding our common home, shedding light on cultural traditions and discussing pressing issues for young people throughout the Region.

For me, Radio Lío is an opportunity to highlight those stories that normally do not receive widespread attention,” he says:

Vania Sevilla, producer of Radio Lío . “This is an opportunity for all marginalized issues and communities to receive the importance they deserve, to bring to light the voices of those who are silenced. The world needs to be fixed and I believe that Radio Lío is an inspiration to raise awareness and unite people for a better society.”

Radio Lío is a unique project as it is the only SIGNIS media outlet in the world. Founded in 2019, it is now in its third round of training sessions and is a reality that is broadcast on various platforms. “We want to educate young people so they can educate even more people. This is a permanent training program, our objective is to integrate our associates in the regions and ensure that young people from all latitudes can join together in a great multicultural dialogue,” he says:

Carlos Ferraro , president of SIGNIS ALC and specialist in media education.

“For me, Radio Lío is a space where I can broaden my horizons by collaborating with people from across the region, I can practice the journalism that I believe in and defend: journalism that gives voice to all people and allows all cultures to be represented. I hope to continue contributing to this living and transformative radio,” he says:

Bárbara Márquez, producer of Radio Lío.

For Alessandro Gomes , executive director of Radio Lío , this project is exciting and encouraging, as you can see young people working to improve the lives of other people. “This project inspires people to be more critical of their daily lives.” Through music, interviews, sports, conversations and dialogues, Radio Lío touches on topics such as justice and human rights, challenging people to listen to points of view that they normally would not even consider. This provides full context and allows people to discover their own opinions.

“Radio Lío is a community space, a media education space where young people can join their voices to shout in the name of justice, freedom, democracy and participation,” he says:

Yorman Galviz, producer of Radio Lío . “This is a space for Latin American integration and I am very grateful for it, since it opens the doors to all young people in the Region. “We are setting a communication precedent in Latin America and the world.”

What sets Radio Lío apart is not only its role in nurturing young voices, but also its commitment to seeking out the stories of those who often go unheard. By empathizing with people and embracing transparency, Radio Lío offers authentic and humanizing news coverage.
