Workshop for university students on 'How does a camera work in a film?
The workshop 'How does a camera work in a film?' made at De Sales International Academy of Film and Media generated enormous interest in cinema in the minds of about 30 Visual Communication college students on July 29, 2023.
It was the second program organized by De Sales International Film and Media Academy, Chennai, India as part of the Media Education Series, the first being, 'How to make a film?'.
The famous cinematographer Mr. P. Annadurai DFT facilitated the session with demonstrations, lectures and 'question and answer' sessions. Starting with the
'Persistence of vision and the functions of a movie camera', Mr. Annadurai explained the role of the cinematographer and the importance of his job in documenting the lights, the emotions, the actions, the scenes of a movie. The cinematographer has to coordinate almost all the activities in film making like all
the required actions have to be ultimately documented by the Chamber, the result of all efforts in filmmaking.
Three short films made by the participants were screened during the workshop. Screened and discussed in detail about the types of shots used, the purpose of
various camera angles, camera positions, movements and lighting, etc.,
In addition to the students, the Heads of Visual Communication Departments of Universities and Screenwriters also participated in the program.
The role of a cinematographer is very important in film making, he has to cover all the actions and perfectly document all the emotions. Showing film clippings, he explained about different types of lighting, various lenses, and filters to create the intended effect.

“A skilled filmmaker needs to generate a lot of emotions in people! Creativity, dedication and immediate actions to express our thoughts and feelings are important for young filmmakers,' said Fr. J. Stephen MSFS, the Director of the Academy. He also extended an open invitation to students to come and use the DeSIFMA facilities to make value-based films.
