The Paradigm of Educommunication in the face of the challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean. From speech to practice
By Alejandro Caro *
Educommunication is an approach that emerged in Latin America three decades ago, as part of the movement started by Paulo Freire for critical education; and at the same time the perspective is linked to the development of critical media education that was being implemented in some European countries, Canada and Australia.
But the world in this period has changed. Digitization, the globalization of media and technologies have managed to transform culture, while at the same time exposing inequality.
Therefore, it is worth asking, how this line of thought and similar approaches in other latitudes can help us to assume these changes and, at the same time, promote transformations, to advance in a just development of humanity and of our Latin American and Caribbean continent. .
Topics such as artificial intelligence, languages, interculturality, the role of the media, ethics and fake news, the construction of the imaginary of development and the valuation of other forms of life were the topics addressed by the Panel - discussion “ El Paradigma de Educommunication against the challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean ” , held on March 18, 2021. Precisely, Educommunication is one of the thematic axes of our 6th Latin American and Caribbean Communication Congress (VI COMLAC), a be held in Panama, in 2022.
